Introduction

An Aadhaar card is a key identity document issued to eligible residents and certain non-residents of India.

There is often confusion among NRIs about Aadhaar eligibility and application rules. Some believe a long stay in India is required, while others assume the process can be completed entirely online from overseas. In reality, NRIs holding a valid Indian passport can apply for an Aadhaar card immediately upon arrival in India—there is no mandatory waiting period.

This guide breaks down the rules, documents, and steps to help you obtain your Aadhaar card easily.

Are NRIs/OCIs Eligible for Aadhar?

NRIs holding a valid Indian passport can apply for Aadhaar immediately upon arrival in India, with no 182‑day waiting period. In contrast, OCI cardholders are required to have resided in India for at least 182 days in the 12 months immediately preceding the date of application.

Remember, you must be physically present in India to apply. You cannot apply from abroad because your fingerprints and iris scan must be captured at an enrolment centre in India.

What Are the Documents Required and How to Apply?

NRIs often have limited time in India, so it’s important to carry all required documents before visiting the Aadhaar enrolment centre to avoid delays or rejection

Essential Documents List

You will need proof of identity, address, and date of birth. For NRIs, your passport is the most important document.

Proof of Identity (PoI)

Valid Indian Passport

Mandatory. It serves as the primary Proof of Identity (PoI).

Proof of Address (PoA)

Passport (if address is Indian), Voter ID, or Utility Bills

If your passport carries an overseas address, you may need an additional Indian address proof.

Points to Note:

  • NRIs with an overseas address on their passport may enrol for Aadhaar using Form 2, 4, or 6.
  • OCI holders must submit a valid foreign passport, OCI card, and valid visa documents.
  • Additional documents may be required in specific cases, such as proof of relationship (e.g., a marriage certificate or spouse’s passport). To view the complete list, click here.
  • An NRI child may enrol at an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, whose Aadhaar number will be recorded.
  • If the passport include your spouse’s name, it can be used as a proof of address for them.

Step-by-Step Application Process

You need to visit a permanent enrolment centre. Here are the steps to follow:

  • Visit an Aadhar Kendra near you. Remember to keep your Indian passport with you
  • Fill out the form: Fill out the enrolment form that is available at the centre. Go through the declarations carefully, since they are slightly different for NRIs. Providing an email ID is mandatory for NRIs.
  • Remember to enrol yourself as an NRI or OCI. Give all required documents (a proof of identity and an address proof – in case you have an Indian passport with an Indian address, it will work for both)
  • Biometric Capture: You will be required to provide your fingerprints, iris scans, and a facial photograph. Ensure all information displayed on the operator’s screen is accurate
  • Receipt Collection: Get your acknowledgement slip, which has an Enrolment ID (EID) and a time stamp on it. You can use this ID to check on the status of your application online

You can provide your international mobile number at the time of registration, but please note that no messages will be delivered to the number.

Where Will My Aadhar Card Be Delivered?

The card will typically be sent to the registered Indian address. If an NRI has registered for Aadhar with an address outside India, they will receive a password protected e-Aadhaar, along with the password to open the file, on their registered email ID.

Why Should NRIs Get an Aadhaar Card?

You do not need an Aadhaar card to maintain NRO account or NRE accounts, but having one simplifies many financial and legal processes in India, where identity verification is required under Indian regulations.

NRIs can use Aadhaar for purposes including, but not limited to:

  • Tax filing
  • Property transactions
  • Accessing government services
  • Opening bank accounts

Important Note: Having an Aadhaar card does not change your tax residency status. Your tax liability is determined by the number of days you spend in India, not by holding an Aadhaar card.

Conclusion

Aadhaar has multiple uses in India, from tax filing and property transactions to opening bank accounts. With the 182‑day residency requirement waived for Indian passport holders, NRIs can now apply for Aadhaar as soon as they visit India—making it easy even during short stays, provided all the required documents are in place. In case you have any additional doubts or queries, you can visit UIDAI’s website.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for an Aadhaar card online from outside India?

No. The application process requires biometric data collection (fingerprints and iris scans), which can only be done in person at an enrolment centre in India.

Is the Aadhaar card mandatory for all NRIs?

This depends on a case-to-case basis. Aadhar is not mandatory to maintain a bank account or to have a general NRI status. However, it is mandatory if you wish to avail certain government subsidies.

Can I give my foreign mobile number in the Aadhaar application?

Yes, you can give a foreign mobile number as part of your Aadhar application. Please note that no messages will be delivered to the number.

What happens if my Indian passport does not have an Indian address?

If your passport has a foreign address, you must provide a separate valid Proof of Address (PoA) for an Indian address, such as a utility bill or a relative’s address proof (with consent), to generate the card.

Is the procedure different for children of NRIs?

Yes. For children below 5 years, no biometrics are captured (Blue Aadhaar). Their Aadhaar is linked to the parent's Aadhaar. Mandatory biometric updates are required when the child turns 5 and 15.
