Unclear boundaries and missing paperwork often create property disputes in rural areas and make it difficult for residents to access formal credit.. The Government of India has launched a scheme called the Survey of Villages and Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas, commonly known as SVAMITVA. The Ministry of Panchayati Raj runs this central sector scheme to help property owners in rural inhabited Abadi areas get accurate and officially surveyed property records.

What is the SVAMITVA Scheme?
The Government of India started this initiative to help people living in rural communities secure formal documentation for their residential property in Abadi areas. Official data from March 2026 shows that authorities have finished mapping 3.29 lakh out of the planned 3.44 lakh villages using drones. By this time, local officials had prepared roughly 3.10 crore property cards across 1.87 lakh villages and successfully distributed 2.65 crore of these cards to homeowners.
