An ATM Stands for Automated Teller Machine, it is a sophisticated electronic device enabling seamless financial transactions, enhancing the efficiency of banking processes. An individual can use an ATM without the help of a bank representative to make transactions or withdraw cash. This electronic banking outlet has made it easy for customers with a debit or credit card to withdraw cash anytime. ATMs are not a new concept, but there is a lot you should know about them to understand the importance of ATMs and how ATMs work.

What is an ATM

An ATM lets users access their bank account and perform financial transactions independently. One can use the ATM if they possess a debit or credit card. The machine allows the insertion of the card in the card slot, requiring a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to access various banking services. It acts as a digital kiosk that connects directly to the bank’s server to process real-time requests.

Essential Components of an ATM

Every ATM contains several essential parts that work together to process your requests.

  • Card Reader: The machine uses this slot to scan the security chip or magnetic stripe to identify your account details.
  • Keypad: These buttons provide a secure way for you to enter your secret pin and choose your transaction amounts.
  • Display Screen: The monitor shows the instructions you need and walks you through each step of the banking process.
  • Cash Dispenser: This internal mechanism counts the currency and provides the money to you through a designated slot.
  • Receipt Printer: A small printer provides a paper record of your activity and shows your current account balance.

History of ATM in Banking

Barclays Bank first introduced the ATM in London in the late 1960s. Although there were many drawbacks, this machine was developed to provide banking services to customers after banking hours. With technological advancements and the introduction of features like PIN, the design and security of ATMs have increased tremendously.

The popularity and demand for ATMs rose during the late 1980s.

  • As more and more people started using ATMs, banking became more convenient for users.
  • Individuals were allowed to withdraw money, check account balances, deposit money, and use many other banking services.
  • As time has passed, ATMs have evolved with many additional features and options.

Types of  ATMs

There are a few different ATM types based on functionality and location.

  • Basic Units: These are simple units that allow cash withdrawals, balance enquiries, and the generation of account statements.
  • Complex Units: These offer additional features like cash or cheque deposits, bill payments and lines of credit.
  • On-site ATMs: These are ATMs located within the bank premises.
  • Off-site ATM: These are ATMs located across various geographical areas outside bank premises.

ATMs can also be categorised on the basis of their purpose:

  • White-label: ATMs operated by Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) are called white-label ATMs. They do not display any specific bank's branding.
  • Green label: Mostly catered to rural areas, these ATMs help facilitate agricultural transactions like crop loans, subsidies, and insurance..
  • Brown label: A third party owns the hardware system of these ATMs, while the bank handles the cash management and branding. They lease the machines from banks.
  • Orange label: These are ATMs used for share market transactions.
  • Yellow label: These ATMs are used for e-commerce transactions like online shopping and bill payments.
  • Pink label: These ATMs are specifically designed to provide a secure environment for women customers.

How does an ATM Work?

The most basic feature of an ATM is cash withdrawal. The steps to withdraw money from an ATM are as follows:

  1. Inset Debit or Credit Card: Once you find an ATM, look for a slot to insert your card. Ensure the chip is facing upwards.
  2. Select Preferred Language: Once the card is inserted, the machine will ask you to choose a preferred language.
  3. Enter your PIN: To proceed with transactions, enter the PIN securely while covering the keypad.
  4. Choose Transaction Type: After you enter the PIN, you can choose the transaction type to withdraw cash or perform a balance enquiry.
  5. Select Bank Account Type: Select savings or current accounts according to your account type.
  6. Enter Required Amount: Enter the amount you want to withdraw from your account.
  7. Collect Cash: After confirmation, the cash will be dispensed, and you can collect it.
  8. Print Receipt: If you want to receive a receipt for the transaction you made, you can select the print receipt option.

Note: Many modern ATMs now offer UPI-based cardless cash withdrawals. You can simply select the 'UPI Cash' option, scan the QR code using your mobile banking app, and collect the cash without using a physical card.
