Report a Fraud

Digital banking has made life in India simpler and faster, from UPI payments to online transfers that take just a few seconds. But as banking becomes easier, fraudsters are also finding smarter ways to take advantage of unsuspecting people. One such growing risk is Mule Account Fraud, where criminals quietly use genuine bank accounts to move illegal money, often without the account holder realising what’s happening.

At Kotak Mahindra Bank, your safety is our priority. We believe the best protection starts with awareness. By understanding how these scams work, you can make safer decisions and protect what truly matters, your hard‑earned money, your financial identity, and your peace of mind.

What Is a Mule Account Scam?

A Mule Account is a bank account used knowingly or unknowingly to transfer money linked to illegal activities such as online scams, phishing frauds, or cybercrime.

Fraudsters don’t need to hack accounts anymore. Instead, they manipulate individuals into using their own accounts to receive and transfer suspicious funds. Even if you don’t intend to commit fraud, acting as a money mule can lead to:

  • Account freezes
  • Loss of access to banking services
  • Regulatory scrutiny
  • Legal consequences

Common Mule Account Scam scenarios you should know:

Romance related Scams:

What is this scam?

Fraudsters build emotional relationships online and use trust to manipulate individuals into moving money on their behalf.

How the scam usually unfolds:

  • You meet someone on social media or a dating platform
  • Over time, they build closeness and emotional dependency
  • They create urgency by sharing a financial issue, such as a medical emergency, a blocked account, or an overseas problem and ask you to receive or transfer money on their behalf using your bank account

What you may not realise:

The money involved could be stolen or linked to illegal activity. By moving it through your account, you unknowingly become the link putting your bank account and financial identity at risk.

Please Note: A genuine relationship will not involve you in moving money through your bank account. If you feel rushed or pressured, pause and think.

Fake Job Offers & Easy Online Income Traps

What is this scam?

Fraudsters misuse job offers, ‘earn from home,’ and ‘easy money’ schemes to move illegal funds through genuine customer accounts.

How the scam usually unfolds:

  • You receive an attractive job offer requiring little effort
  • Employer asks to use your account to receive payments
  • You are instructed to forward the money after keeping a small commission

What you may not realise:

Your account is being used to route illegal funds, which can lead to account freezes and investigation even though you believed the work or job was genuine.

Please Note: Your bank account is not a payroll tool for unknown companies. Real employers never ask you to move money or earn commissions through your account. Be wary of easy money offers. If you feel rushed or pressured—stop, think, and verify.

Social Engineering & Trust Based Requests

What is this scam?

Fraudsters impersonate people you trust, such as friends, relatives, colleagues, or seniors, to create urgency and bypass verification.

How the scam usually unfolds:

  • You receive an urgent call or message asking for immediate financial help
  • You are requested to temporarily receive or transfer funds
  • You are pressured to act quickly without checking

What you may not realise:

Even one transaction done in haste can flag your account as suspicious and expose you to regulatory scrutiny.

Please Note: Always verify money requests through a separate and trusted channel, no matter how urgent they sound. As a safety habit, families and close friends can agree on a simple secret word or question. If the person cannot confirm it, stop and verify first.

Loan, Credit Card & Account Assistance Frauds

What is this scam?

Fraudsters pose as bank relationship managers offering quick loans, credit card upgrades, or account assistance, while using your account to move funds.

How the scam usually unfolds:

  • You are approached with offers of instant loans or account support
  • You are told a test transaction, refund, or verification amount must pass through your account
  • You are asked to transfer the received funds onward

What you may not realise:

Such activity closely matches known mule account patterns and can result in your account being flagged or restricted.

Please Note: Banks and financial institutions never require customer accounts for internal verification or testing.

Undelivered Parcel, Customs & Fake Challan Messages

What is this scam?

Fraudsters send official‑looking messages about parcels, customs charges, or even traffic challans to trick customers into moving money.

How the scam usually unfolds:

  • You receive an SMS or call about an undelivered parcel or pending charge
  • You are asked to receive a refund or transfer money to “resolve” the issue

What you may not realise:

These transactions are often linked to organised fraud networks, not genuine authorities.

Please note: Do not act on unsolicited payment requests. Official authorities do not ask individuals to move money through bank accounts.

Smart Banking Habits to Stay Protected

Here are some simple habits that can help you bank safely every day:

  • Never receive or transfer money on behalf of unknown individuals
  • Do not share OTPs, UPI PINs, card details, or login credentials
  • Verify every financial request through official or trusted channels
  • Be cautious of urgency, fraud thrives on panic

If something feels even slightly off, stop and check.
